About us

The Chapman Barrigan lecture series commemorates the lives and work of two leading women in the property industry – Honor Chapman CBE and Trish Barrigan.

The series began in 2014 and the first six lectures from 2014-2019 were in memory of Honor Chapman.

The seventh lecture in 2023 was the first held in memory of both Honor and Trish Barrigan.

The events celebrate female leadership in the real estate field and are funded by the JLL UK Foundation and PineBridge Benson Elliot and supported by a committee made up of friends of Honor and Trish.

The lectures are free to attend and the organisers actively seek to encourage younger members of the property industry to join them at each lecture.

The latest lecture was given on Wednesday 8 May 2024 by Rosemary Feenan.

Honor

Chapman

Honor Chapman was an urban planning and property expert who played a key role in the development of London during the 1990s and as well had a marked impact on the cityscapes of Berlin and Cardiff.

She studied estate management at London University and then town planning at University College London before working for 10 years at Nathaniel Lichfield & Associates, where she became a partner in 1971 at just 29, working on projects such as Covent Garden Market and the regeneration of Bath.

Following a spell as a freelance consultant, she joined Jones Lang Wotton (now Jones Lang LaSalle/JLL) in 1979 as their first female partner.  Over the next 20 years she developed the company’s research practice, giving it a reputation of world renown pioneering the application of modern business research to the commercial property industry. During this period she worked on many famous projects such as Canary Wharf, Stockley Park, Cardiff Bay and the Potsdamer Plaza in Berlin.

In 1992 she conducted a major piece of research into London’s competitive position for inward investment.  This led to the creation of London First Centre, the inward investment agency now part of London & Partners which she set up for the business campaign group London First (now BusinessLDN) and which helped many hundreds of companies to locate in London, generating thousands of jobs.

She held numerous posts in her career, most notably as a Crown Estate Commissioner, vice-chair of the Royal Academy, founder board member and then chair of the London Development Agency, board member of Transport for London and the Design Museum, as well as non-executive roles for Dyson and London Communications Agency.  And in her later life became an award-winning breeder of Jersey cattle at her dairy farm in Somerset where she died in August 2009.

Trish

Barrigan

Recognised as one of the most influential women in European real estate, Trish Barrigan was a leader in global real estate investing as well as a fierce advocate for the advancement of women in the sector.

Trish began her professional career at Goldman Sachs, where she spent a decade in principal investing for the firm’s Whitehall Real Estate Funds, first in New York, then later in Paris and London. She joined Goldman Sachs after graduating summa cum laude from Boston College in 1994.  As a scholar-athlete at Boston College (which she attended on a soccer scholarship), Trish captained the women’s soccer team (the BC Eagles) for three years, setting goalkeeping records that still stand today.

Trish was instrumental in establishing the Whitehall Funds’ European presence in the 1990s, and navigating its US portfolios through the turbulence of the early 2000s. She then spent two years in the Middle East as Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Global Real Estate Investments for the Dubai Investment Group; under her tenure, the Group’s portfolio of direct investments increased from $500m to $3.0bn.

In 2006, in the career step for which she is best known, Trish co-founded Benson Elliot Capital Management (today PineBridge Benson Elliot), one of Europe’s longest standing real estate private equity firms. Her fierce determination to build a market-leading business set a distinct imprint on the ethos, activities and operation of the firm and, in 2018, she was appointed Managing Partner. The culture of tolerance, openness, camaraderie, competitive spirit and resiliency she embedded in the firm continues to define the business today.

Trish’s passion for mentorship and advancement of women in real estate investment was well known, as evidenced by her roles as co-founder of Women in Real Estate (London), an active leader of Real Estate Balance, and a dedicated and valued member of PoWRE. Her professional accolades included recognitions as ‘European Industry Figure of the Year’ by Private Equity Real Estate in 2019, earning a place on PERE’s list of ‘most influential women in private real estate investing’, and her appointment in 2019 as a Global Governing Trustee of the Urban Land Institute.  In 2022 the ULI established the Trish Barrigan Award for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in her honour.

Liz Peace CBE

Liz Peace CBE

Liz was a very atypical civil servant in the Ministry of Defence for 27 years before coming into the property industry in 2002 as CEO of the British Property Federation. Apart from spearheading the ultimately successful campaign for Real Estate Investment Trusts, Liz spent most of her time trying to persuade politicians and public just how important the property industry is for the social and financial wellbeing of society and the property industry just how vital it is to move with the times and become more sustainable, diverse and customer focussed. Neither tasks are by any means finished and Liz continues to bang the drum for both in her range of current non-executive roles which include Old and Park Royal Mayoral Development Corporation,  Howard de Walden Estates, Greencore Homes and the University of Cambridge Property Board.
